Faux Billy Ball Felted Flowers

I loveeeee the look of billy balls, also know as Caspedias. The real thing is so expensive though! I wanted to try making some to possible use at my wedding, so I went about attempting to felt for my first time! Here's the finished product:

I love how it turned out!

I first set about making the flowers. To do this you need wool roving (I got mine off amazon here), hot water, soap, and paper towels.

Separate the wool into thin strips.

Roll the strip up tightly into a ball.

Dunk in warm water and keep it submerged until all the air bubbles come out.

Drizzle some dish soap on it, and then start gently rolling it all around back in forth in the palms of your hands.

Do this until the ball has been "felted" aka when the water and soap disappear and when the ball starts keeping its form on its own very well.

For the stems, I used floral wire from Walmart. I poked a hole in the flower first with the stem.

And then added some hot glue to the stem and stuck it in the premade hole.

The flowers I made were pretty small, so I needed a small vase to keep them in. I had an old mini maple syrup bottle in my room that someone had given me years ago. If you take the cap and sticker off, it makes a perfect mini vase!

I added a purple bow and arranged the flowers, and that was it! So adorable!

I'm planning on making three more of them and using them somewhere at my wedding. I was lucky and was able to find three more of the exact syrup bottles from an etsy shop called Jazzies Junque. I was so happy to find them! I'm thinking I could line them up on the guest book table or something like that.

Yes, that was our living room about 30 minutes ago.

That wasn't even all of it either.

I leave bright and early tomorrow morning to make the western trek to the other side of Pennsylvania to go back to school. I don't know where summer went, but can it please come back and stay for a bit???

It has been a very busy summer. I started working as a receptionist at a real estate company the morning after I got back from school....and pretty much worked all summer until today at 5. Then I packed like a mad woman and sweated a lot packing up all my clothes and shoes and crafting supplies to take back to school with me.

While I am always sad when summer comes to an end, I'm a little more comforted with year. Yes, I still have to leave home and my man (no fun!!) but i'm happy in knowing that I only have ONE MORE SEMESTER to get through. Come December, I will be graduated and D-O-N-E DONE! I turn 21 soon too...and I'm rooming with three really good friends at school, so I'm excited to hang out and have fun and have one last hurrah before coming home and getting married about 2 months after I graduate (squee!!)

Anyway. Life will be a little crazy for a bit while I get settled in, but I'll be back soon with probably more outfit photos (school has such good mirrors for it) and awkward and awesome Thursdays....because some how campus life always gets awkward for me. heh heh heh. Have a good weekend all!

Hope you all made it here safe... and survived the East coast EARTHQUAKE!!!! Seems like all of bloggy world lives in like Idaho or somewhere in the midwest.... But anyone in the east coast can sympathize with me. We don't get earthquakes much around here. It was all very exciting. Haha. Sounds like there were no real injuries...just some minor damages. heh heh heh.

Outfit Post & Early Birthday Present!

I sported a great thrifted find in my outfit today!

Shirt: Old Navy. Skirt: Thrifted. Belt: Rue 21. Shoes: Payless. Necklace: H&M

I found this great houndstooth skirt at a salvation army for 2 bucks! I originally had it set aside to refashion because if I wore it on my hips it was an awkward length...but then I realized if I hiked it up a bit & belted it the length would be perfect!

Houndstooth is more of a fall/winter pattern I'd say.... but summer had been cooling down over this way. I think fall is right around the corner.

In other news, I got an early birthday present from my parents! My birthday is not until Sept. 21st, but I'll be away at school then so I got my gift now...

The sewing machine I had registered for! Wahoo!! Now when I move out I will have my own, and not have to come use my mom's all the time. Now I REALLY have to learn to make something besides pillows...eck! We'll see how this goes :)

Purple Rosette Zippered Wristlet Tutorial

I've got a sewing tutorial this week!

I go back to school this coming Saturday and needed a wristlet to take with to carry my phone, ID card, etc with me around campus. I looked around on etsy but they were all at least $25 dollars and I couldn't find any I loved anyway.

When I saw this tutorial by Mommy by Day...Crafter by Night, I thought that she made it look pretty easy to make a zippered pouch, even for someone like me who can only sew pillows.

So....I told myself it was baisically a pillow with a lining...and zipper....and wristlet part....and attempted one!

This is my finished product:

To make one, cut out two pieces of 8" x 6" fabric for the main fabric, lining, and fabric interfacing.

I had iron on interfacing lying around, so I ironed it on to the back side of the lining fabric.

Then I laid my front piece of fabric right side down, with a zipper right side down on top, with the interfacing right side down on-top of the zipper. I pinned all the pieces in place and sewed together.

Do the same thing with the other side. This is what is should look like...kind of. Although sew yours straighter than I did. (This was my first time sewing a zipper, give me some props ok?? haha)

Note: at this point you should unzip the zipper half way!

For the wristlet part of the bag I ran a stitch down some bias tape to use.

Pin the right sides together of the exterior fabric and sew around the whole outside.

I also pinned the wristlet part on at this point....although I should have stopped and realized that this was the inside of the exterior fabric....and sewing it on the inside would not allow me to use it on the outside....but I didn't until it was too late.

So, I made it work...which I explain later. But if you ever make one, make sure you pin and sew it on the right way!!!

Next I pinned the lining right side together, and sewed all around it except the corner which matches up with the wristlet side.

Then I flipped everything to the right side (that's why you needed to keep the zipper halfway open!) and I pulled the wristlet strap through the hole in the lining, and then sewed that hole up.
