DIY Burlap Pumpkins

I'm not big on decorating for "Halloween."  I think witches are ugly, spiders are gross, and ghosts are scary!! So when I decorate for fall I stick with the happier aspects: pumpkins and corn husks and leaves, etc. I love this project because it is a cute and neutral fall project that I can leave out all the way through autumn until Thanksgiving.

DIY Burlap Pumpkins

I love the natural feel to these burlap pumpkins. And of course I had to jazz a few up...so I did with a metallic polka dot!

Here's how I made them:

I started with a square piece of burlap.

For my polka-dotted pumpkins, I painted on polka dots using a metallic gold paint and a circle sponge paintbrush.

Isn't this so cute? I think I need to polka dot more burlap :)

Next I cut around the corners so I had a generally circle shape.

With a needle and thread I sewed around the perimeter of the circle with large stitches

Then I pulled tight so my pumpkin started to take shape

I added in some fluff and a stick as a stem

And then sewed everything tight and together

I made two different sizes, small and large.  I arranged them on my coffee table with a few white pumpkins from a local orchard.

This little arrangement makes me so happy :) And, in good news, my dog Jefferson only grabbed onto one by the stick ONCE, and after I told him no he has left them alone since. He did, however, grab one of my spare sticks out of my trash in my craft room and chew it apart all over the floor. But alas, at least my cute little pumpkins are ok :)

Happy fall everyone! Here's to burlap pumpkins and all other cute non-Halloween decorations :)

  2. I'm with you, I don't like spooky decorations. I like to celebrate FALLoween instead. :) I love this craft, especially the cute polka dot pattern! I pinned it so I can try it in the very near future!
